Applications of AI Games in Video Games
Fantasygems Game leverages artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to create a range of exciting, immersive virtual worlds and experiences. They allow computer-controlled characters and entities (non-player characters or NPCs) to exhibit intelligent behaviors, make decisions and interact with the game environment in a more lifelike manner.
The most common application of AI in video games involves combat. Many contemporary action and first-person shooter video games use a form of AI called finite state machines to simulate the behavior of human opponents, as seen in the Tekken and Mortal Kombat series. FSMs prompt enemies to move, attack, and heal based on the player’s actions, providing realistic gameplay that rivals that of human players.
AI That Generates Social Media Feeds for Game Characters
More sophisticated applications of AI in video games include generative AI, which uses AI-powered algorithms to automate the creation of game content like landscapes and levels. This technique increases scalability and introduces variability, ensuring that each playthrough offers a unique experience.
Other innovative applications of AI in video games involve a variety of machine learning techniques. These techniques vary from pathfinding algorithms that enable NPCs to navigate in-game environments to reinforcement learning, which allows NPCs to learn and adapt to the behavior of players over time.
However, not all video game industry experts are on board with this trend toward AI-powered gaming. Josh Sawyer, a studio design director at the narratively-acclaimed game developer Obsidian Entertainment, which made Fallout: New Vegas and Pentiment, says that he isn’t convinced that generative AI can replicate the kind of high-concept, compelling storylines that make such games so popular.…
